Božinović started his political career in 1987, when he started to work as an adviser in the Republic's Secretariat for Defence of Croatia. In the 1990s, he worked in various governmental institutions in the Balkan area- such as the Croatian Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Serbia and Montenegro for two years from 2002 to 2004. Following his tenure as an Ambassador, he was appointed as Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Croatia in 2004. From 2005 to 2008, he served as Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to the NATO. In September 2008, he was appointed State Secretary for European integration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MVPEI) and in July 2009, as State Secretary for Political Affairs at the same ministry.
