Ara Warkes Darzi, Baron Darzi of Denham, Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, was born on the 7th May 1960 in Iraq. Mr. Darzi is an important surgeon at Imperial College London, where he holds the Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery, specialising in the field of minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery.

Political Career[edit]

He joined the House of Lords in 2007 with the Labour Party and he was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary at the Department of Health. In 2009 Ara Darzi was appointed as a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council and one year later, under David Cameron, he became a United Kingdom Global Ambassador for Health and Life Sciences.

Education[edit]

Ara Darzi studied in Ireland obtaining a Master's Degree at the Trinity College Dublin and the Fellowships of essentially all the Royal Colleges in the British Isles. He has been president of the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering. In 2008 he received the honorary degree “Doctor of Engineering” from the University of Bath. He also holds the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons.

Notable Work[edit]

In 2014 Lord Darzi was awarded the Qatari sash of Independence by the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in recognition of his contribution to the development of the health sector of Qatar.
