Laura Boldrini was born on 28 April 1961. She is a journalist and the current president of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy since 16 March 2013.

Political career

In 1989 she was employed for four years at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). From 1993 until 1998 she worked at the World Food Programme (WFP) as the Italian spokesperson. She took part in many missions in the former Yugoslavia, Caucausus, Afghanistan, Tajikstan, Mozambico and Iraq. From 1998 until 2012 she was spokesperson of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and she coordinated public information campaigns in Southern Europe. Recently, she dealt with the influx of migrants and refuges in the Mediterranean. Additionally, she participated in many missions to crisis spots, including the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Caucasus, Angola, Bosnia, Sri Lanka, Malawi, Yemen Burundi, Jordanian and Rwanda. In 2013 she was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies as an independent candidate in the Left Ecology and Freedom party list. Then, on the16th of March 2013, she became the president of the Chamber of Deputies and she is the third woman to fill this role.

Education

She graduated in Law at the University La Sapienza of Rome.
