Alexandra Papariga

Alexandra Papariga was born in Athens in 1945. She is a Greek politician and teacher. Elected MP with KKE in elections of 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2009.

Political Career[edit]

In 1961 she participated in the peace movement and the student youth organization of the E.D.A. Taking an active part in various student protests, she was union member in Panathenaic student organization set up during the student struggles. She was a member of the Office of the youth organization of the E.D.A and secretary and member of the Student Office of Lambrakis Democratic Youth. In 1968, during the dictatorship, she organized in KKE and was active in the movement of Families of Political Prisoners.

In 1974, she joined the Office of the City Commission of the Party Organisation Athens and then became active in the women's movement. She was among the founding members of the Federation of Greek Women and participated in organizing events for the International Year of Women, and until 1981, participated in the international conference of the World Federation of Democratic Women and UN. In 1978, at the 10th Congress of the Communist Party, she was elected member of the Central Committee of the party in 1986. On 27.2.1991, at the 13th Congress of the Communist Party, she was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the party, a position which she was unanimously re-elected at the 15th Congress of the Communist Party (26/05/1996). She was the first woman to assume the post of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party.

Education Career[edit]

She studied in the Phisophical department of the University of Athens. She speaks Russian and English.

Notable work[edit]

She is the author of a book on the Emancipation and liberation of Women.
