Alistair Carmichael is the Liberal Democrat MP for Orkney and Shetland, and has been since 2001. He was born in 1965 and raised in the Western Isles.

Political Career[edit]

Alistair was first elected to Parliament in 2001, replacing Jim Wallace as MP for Orkney and Shetland. During his time at Parliament he has shadowed a number of portfolios in opposition, speaking for his party on issues relating to the work of the Home Office, transport and Scotland. After the recent coalition agreement between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, he was appointed as Deputy Government Chief Whip.

After the 2010 UK General Election produced a coalition government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, Alistair was appointed as Deputy Chief Whip to the government, a role which he held until October 2013, when he became the Secretary of State for Scotland. In 2012, Alistair was also appointed as the deputy leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats.

Education[edit]

Alistair attended Port Ellen Primary School and Islay High School. He gained an LLB in 1992 at the University of Aberdeen, a diploma in Legal Practice in 1993 and qualified as a solicitor and Notary Public in 1995.
