Arndt took up cultural diplomacy in 1961, and worked for the US Information Agency (USIA) for 24 years before retiring in 1985. Upon retirement, he served as Diplomat in Residence at the University of Virginia, and later taught at George Washington University. Arndt has served on boards of many different organizations including the National Peace Foundation (NPF), Americans for the Universality of UNESCO (AUU), the Fulbright Association (FA), the Council of International Programs, and the International Society for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Interchange (ISECSI).
