Introduction

Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is a life tenure member of the Italian Senate.

Political Career

Born in 1920 in Livorno and graduated in humanities in Pisa’s Normale University, Carlo Azeglio worked for many years in the Banca d’Italia until he assumed the directory in the 70s. From 1993 to 1994 he was called to form a technical government of which he was charged with premiership after the collapse of the Italian eleventh legislature. The Ciampi Cabinet resigned on 1994 but Ciampi continued his political career as the Treasury, Balance and Economic Planning Minister for the twelfth legislature and honorary governor of the Bank of Italy. He has also fulfilled many international mandates. His contribution in Italian politics was crucial to guarantee Italian fulfilment of the European standards dictated by the Maastricht Treaty. In 1999 he was elected to be the tenth Italian Head of State (Presidente Della Repubblica) gaining the Senator for life title guaranteed by the constitution. In the seventeenth legislature he is part of the Mixed group and works as a member of the permanent commission for Finance and Treasury.
