Dragomans[edit]

Interpreters or guides between countries of Arabic, Turkish and Persian speaking populations who had particular importance during the Ottoman Empire. Dragomans were tasked with linguistic and diplomatic duties, particularly in establishing and maintaining dialogue with Christian European states. The majority of dragomans were of ethnic Greek origin.
