After receiving a diploma in Chemical Engineering at the University of Neuchatel in 1975, Stephanou completed his doctoral studies in Organic Chemistry at the University of Zurich, graduating in 1979 for his thesis: "Transamidation Reactions on Aminolactames". He then went on to complete post-graduate studies in the field of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Geneva, which he then completed in 1980.

He was then awarded the position of Lecturer and Research Associate at the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University in 1982 before quickly being chosen for the post Chargé des Cours et des Recherches at the University of Geneva in 1984. Stephanou progressed quickly at the University of Crete where he was appointed Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Crete (1986) and then Associate Professor of Chemistry in 1989. Presently he holds the title: Professor of Environmental Organic Chemistry at the University of Crete (1993-present).
