Professor Euripides G. Stephanou is an academic who currently holds the position of Rector of the University of Crete. He has also held numerous international academic positions and published over 90 articles.

Education

After receiving a diploma in Chemical Engineering at the University of Neuchatel in 1975, Stephanou completed his doctoral studies in Organic Chemistry at the University of Zurich, graduating in 1979 for his thesis: "Transamidation Reactions on Aminolactames". He then went on to complete post-graduate studies in the field of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Geneva, which he then completed in 1980.

Career

Stephanou began his career as Maître-Assistant at the University of Geneva where he stayed from 1981-1982. He was then awarded the position of Lecturer and Research Associate at the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University in 1982 before quickly being chosen for the post Chargé des Cours et des Recherches at the University of Geneva in 1984. Stephanou progressed quickly at the University of Crete where he was appointed Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Crete (1986) and then Associate Professor of Chemistry in 1989. Presently he holds the title: Professor of Environmental Organic Chemistry at the University of Crete (1993-present).

Roles and Achievements

Alongside a fruitful career in academia, Stephanou has also served as Research Associate at the Swiss Federal Institute for Water Resources & Water Pollution Control (EAWAG) (1980-1981) as well as being a member of the E.U. project: "Organic Micropollutants in the Aquatic Environmet", an expert on the UNEP and a member of the European Environmental Research Organisation (EERO).
