Born in Milan, Italy in 1939, Fausto Pocar is an Italian jurist and Professor of International Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Milan, where he has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences and as Vice-Rector.

Professor Pocar has had long standing experience in the fields of human rights and humanitarian law. He has lectured at The Hague Academy of International Law and serves as a member of the board of the Institute of International Law and Vice-President of San Remo’s Institute of International Humanitarian Law, in addition to holding membership in a number of other international law associations.

Furthermore, Professor Pocar served for 16 years (1984-2000) as a member of the Human Rights Committee under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, acting as its Chairman from 1991-1992 and Rapporteur from 1989-1990.

Professor Pocar was appointed to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and served as a Judge in a Trial Chamber and the Appeals Chamber of the Tribunal, and acted as president of the Tribunal from 2005 to 2008. In addition, he has also served as Judge of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
