Born in Milan, Italy in 1939, Fausto Pocar is an Italian jurist and Professor of International Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Milan, where he has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences and as Vice-Rector.

Professional experience

Professor Pocar has had long standing experience in the fileds of human rights and humanitarian law. He has lectured at The Hague Academy of International Law and serves as a member of the board of the Institute of International Law and Vice-President of San Remo’s Institute of International Humanitarian Law, in addition to holding membership in a number of other international law associations. Furthermore, Professor Pocar served for 16 years (1984-2000) as a member of the Human Rights Committee under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, acting as its Chairman from 1991-1992 and Rapporteur from 1989-1990. He was appointed Special Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for visits to Chechnya and the Russian Federation during the 1995-1996 conflict. He has also been the Italian delegate to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its legal subcommittee. Professor Pocar was appointed to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and served as a Judge in a Trial Chamber and the Appeals Chamber of the Tribunal, and acted as president of the Tribunal from 2005 to 2008. In addition, he has also served as Judge of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

Education

He studied at University of Milan Law School where he gratuated as cum laude in 1961 and as Libero docente in International Law in 1969. He was also a member of the Milan Bar. He is fluent in Italian, English, French and Spanish.

Special achievments

He has been for more than a decade the Italian delegate to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its Legal Subcommittee.
