She was also a member of the Galway City Vocational Education Committee as well as Galway City Council's Transport Strategic Policy Committee. She was made mayor of Galway in 2011-2012. In July 2013, she was appointed to the Senate in order to replace Martin Mcaleese who had recently resigned from the Irish Upper House (Seanad Eireann).
