Martin John Callanan or Baron Callanan (born on the 8th August 1961) is a British Conservative Party Politician.

Political Career[edit]

Baron Callanan started his political career when he was a councillor on Tyne and Wear County Council between 1983 and 1986 and the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council between 1987 and 1996. He was elected to the European Parliament in 1998 and became leader of the european Conservatives and Reformists group in the Parliament. He held a position of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

He lost his Parliamentary Seat in the 2014 Parliamentary Elections. He was subsequently appointed to the House of Lords on the 4th of September 2014 and was made a Life Peer. Callanan was also a member of the European Parliament for North East England and Chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists group from 1999 to 2014.

Education[edit]

In 1985, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Newcastle Polytechnic.
