Our world is changing faster than we can even imagine, and the places we live in reflect these changes. Towns are becoming cities and cities are turning into megacities which are expanding every day. It is easy to forget that it is the people, rather than the landscape, which sculpts a city. We are not merely inhabitants in the place where we live; rather we have been citizens from day one.

At the beginning of the 66th Stuttgart Book Week, the audience will be able to, for example, meet Roy Jacobsen, one of the most widely read authors of the kingdom, who will present his novel ‘White Sea’. They also have the chance to meet Liv Marit Weberg, who will be representing children’s literature with her ‘Fortunately nobody needs me’ book.

The purpose of the Weltstadt project is to support the development and implementation of projects which aim at giving new life to neglected areas. Top-down initiatives to solve inequality in cities often remain ineffective as they fail to influence local residents. For this reason, the Weltstadt has been helping initiatives characterised by a bottom-up approach in the last few years.

In addition, the bookworms present photographs by Ken Schluchtmann. The selection of pictures have captured a unique combination of Norwegian landscape and architecture. A film series by the city media center with Norwegian productions and a ‘Norwegian Day’ complete the guest appearance.

It has supported research in Riga and Belgrade about cultural actions in abandoned neighborhoods. In Bangalore and New York, Weltstadt has helped with the creation of a network for crowd-sourcing projects, which consist of implementing projects through voluntary contributions of those who are not directly involved but nonetheless care about its success. In Brazil and in Southern Europe, several initiatives of co-production and sharing have been organized.

The Norwegian events at the book fair have been made possible by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Berlin, in cooperation with NORLA. A lot of Norwegian books will be on display thanks to the members of the Norwegian Publishers’ Association. In addition, plenty of German translations of Norwegian books will be exhibited.

Meanwhile, a Weltstadt exhibition is travelling the world in order to promote the importance of this initiative. The project doesn’t concern any specific area, as it faces issues common to the entire global civilization. The exhibition is now taking place in Mexico City – in the framework of the German-Mexican year - and it has previously been held in Berlin, Belgrade, Johannesburg, New York and Riga.

The exhibition of books makes up the core of the book fair in Stuttgart, and Norwegian books will be given a prominent setting. Throughout the duration of the book weeks, the six Norwegian authors will take part in several readings and events, and there will also be art exhibitions and screenings of films related to Norwegian topics.

Thanks to this initiative, a new vision for our cities doesn’t seem to be too far-fetched.

The book fair attracts around 300 exhibitors, publishers and approximately 100,000 visitors. Six Norwegian authors will give their insights into the Norwegian literature scene at the Stuttgart Haus der Wirtschaft: Gard Sveen, Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold, Liv Marit Weberg, Morten A. Strøksnes, Roy Jacobsen and Tore Rem. The fair will be accompanied by readings, lectures, the film ‘Norway Day’, and a photo exhibition “Architecture and Landscape in Norway” by Ken Schluchtmann.

In addition, the bookworms present photographs by Ken Schluchtmann. The selection of pictures have captured a unique combination of Norwegian landscape and architecture. A film series by the city media center with Norwegian productions and a ‘Norwegian Day’ complete the guest appearance.
