Baastrup joined the SF (Socialist People's Party) in 1987. She was a member of SF's executive committee in 1992 and continued in this role until 2001. In 1994 Baastrup sat as parliamentary candidate in Køge nomination district. At the general election September 21, 1994, she was elected to an additional mandate in Roskilde County constituency with 2,404 votes.
