Between 2003 and 2007 he was a member of the States-Provincial in the province of Groningen, where he held the portfolio physical infrastructure, tourism and recreation. In 2006 and 2007 he worked as a student-assistant at the University of Leiden on a research project about the reform of social security. Since 2007 he continues working on this research as a PhD-student. Between 2008 and 2012 he worked for the Ministry of Finance.
