Manual María Chaves González started his political career as Congress deputy in the General Elections that took place in 1977, representing Cádiz. He held this position until 1990. From 1987 to 1990, under Prime Minister Felipe González, he served as Minister of Work and National Health Service. In 1990, he became president of JunAndalucia, position that he held until 2009. From 1994 to 2010, he was the Chairman of the Andalusian PSOE party and from 2000 to 2012 he was also the Chairman of the national PSOE.
