O Clochartaigh won his Galway West seat in the 2011 General Election. Before representing Sinn Fein he was a member of the Labour Party but was unable to win a seat on Galway County Council at the 2004 local elections. During his political career he has been a leading critic of the government for its infrastructural and industrial neglect of the west.

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh began his career in politics as a member of the Labour Party. He stood in the local elections of the Galway County Council in 2004, but was not elected. He later left the Labour Party in favour of the Sinn Féin. In 2011 he was elected to Seanad Éireann on the Agricultural Panel.

O' Clochartaigh is a founding member of 'Na Fanaithe' theatre company. He is also the manager and artistic director of An Taibhdhearc as well as being a Producer and Director with 'Ros na Run' and 'Fair City'. Trevor is a major critic of the government due to its supposed failure to protect and maintain the Irish language. He has also been the project manager of national Irish language newspaper, Gaelsceal. O Clochartaigh also takes an active interest in agricultural issues. He is responsible for forming the 'Defending Rural Ireland' campaign along with Martin Ferris.
