Themessl became part of the Austrian Freedom Party in 1975. In 1985, he became part of the representation of the city Hohenems and between 1990 and 1995, he held the post of the chairman of the audit committee of Hohenems. In 1995, Themessl became vice mayor for the city council of Hohenems. After the People's Party victory in the elections in Hohenems in 2000, Themessl his position as Vice Mayor. He then left the city council for the School city council.
