Sigmar Gabriel (born 12 September 1959) is a German politician who has served as Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy and Vice Chancellor of Germany since 2013. Since 2009 he has been chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He was Minister of the Environment from 2005 to 2009.
Political Career[edit]
Before entering into Politics Gabriel Sigmar spent two years as a conscripted soldier. He joined as a member of the youth SPD in 1977. In 1987 he entered full time into politics as a deputy councillor for the Goslar region. He held various councillor roles until 1990 when he became the Member of the Parliament of Lower Saxony. From 1998 to 1999 and from 2003 to 2005 he became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and 1999-2003 Minister President of Lower Saxony .
Since 2005 he has been Member of Parliament for Environment, Conservation and Nuclear Energy and since December 2013 he has been Minister for Business and Energy.
Education[edit]
Gabriel Sigmar graduated in German, Politics and Sociology from the University of Göttingen.
