Jean Besson (born July 1st, 1948) is a French Senator representing the Department of Drôme and a member of the French Socialist Party.
Besson was also bestowed a Knight of the National Order of Merit in 1989 for his leadership role during the French Post Workers’ Strike of 1968.
Political Career[edit]
In 1977, at the age of 28, Besson became Deputy Mayor of Valence and from 1978-2004, he served as a Municipal Councillor in Drôme.
In 1989, Besson was elected to the French Senate for the Department of Drôme. In the Senate Besson had a number of positions including: Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces, Rapporteur (parliamentary press liaison) of the Energy Budget, Chairman of the France-China interparliamentary Group, and Director of the French Institute.
Education[edit]
Prior to entering politics, Besson worked as a postman and union leader.
