Carmelo Abela was born in 1972. Carmelo Abela is a member of the parliament of Malta and is serving as an incumbent Labour MP.

He currently works at HSBC Bank Malta PLC. Abela first contested general elections in 1996 and was elected in every general election since then. He served as Deputy Speaker of the House between June 2003 and May 2010. In the past years he represented the Maltese Parliament in a number of conferences abroad, both as Member of Parliament and also in his role of Deputy Speaker. He is serving as Government Whip in this legislature. He is also a member of the House Business Committee and Privileges Committee.
