Michael Conaghan, born September 1944, grew up in County Donegal, but now lives in Ballyfermot, Dublin, with his wife Marian and their two children. He was elected as a Teachta Dála for the Dublin South-Central constituency at the 2011 general election.
Political career[edit]
Michael has been a member of the Labour Party since 1990, and was elected to the Dublin City Council in 1991 to represent the Ballyfermot ward, having had previously held the role of Chairman of the City of Dublin VEC for many years. He was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin on 21 June 2004, holding the position until June 2005. He was Dublin’s 375th Lord Mayor. During his term in office as Mayor, Michael paid particular attention to community policing, seeking to establish a specific council committee to deal with issues relating to social justice and equality. Michael is a teacher by profession and was Vice-Principal of Inchicore College of Further Education. He is a passionate supporter of issues relating to the arts, heritage and culture.
