Congress for Cultural Freedom (26 June 1950-1967)[edit]

Founded at the Titania Palace in West Berlin in 1950. Funded by the CIA, its aim was to prove the creativity, cultural power and intellectual freedom of the US as more compatible with culture than that of the USSR. In its heyday, it had offices in 35 different countries, sponsored many artists, authors, poets, international events, ran a news service, and produced more than 24 publications, including Encounter (1953-1991) and Der Monat (1948-1987).
