Aquifers[edit]

Aquifers are underground layers of water-bearing permeable rock or unconsolidated materials holding groundwater that can be extracted using a water well. Most land areas on Earth have some form of aquifer, however, these sources of fresh water are rapidly being depleted by the human population, causing serious problems, especially in coastal areas, where the wells are replenished by salt water after reaching a certain level of depletion.
