Being one of the longest-serving Members of Parliament in the UK in recent years, he retired from Parliament at the 2005 general election. In 2005 it was announced that he would be created a life peer, and the same year he was created Baron Anderson of Swansea in the County of West Glamorgan. He was appointed a DL (Deputy Lieutenant) of West Glamorgan in February 2006.
