Alain Tourret (born December 25, 1947) is a PRG (Radical Party of the Left) member of the French National Assembly for the sixth district of Calvados in Northwestern France. From 2004-2012, Tourret was the Vice-President of the Regional Assembly for Culture and from 2010-2012, he was the Vice-President of the European Fund for Tourism and Human Rights. Tourret also founded and chaired the International Institute of Human Rights and Peace.
Political Career[edit]
Tourret joined the PRG in 1972 and was elected Mayor of Moult, a commune in Calvados, in 1981.
Tourret made his debut on the national political scene however in 1997 however, by defeating Michel d'Ornano, UDF deputy and outgoing president of the Regional Council of Lower Normandy, in a district that had long been the electoral stronghold of Olivier Stirn, a retiring right wing politician.
From 2004-2010, Tourret served on the Regional Assembly of Normandy. During his tenure there, he was put in charge of youth, culture, sport and leisure, international relations, decentralized cooperation and human rights.
In 2012, Tourret was elected to the French National Assembly for the sixth district of Calvados. Since being elected, he has fought for many progressive policies, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, election reform, etc.
Education[edit]
Tourret studied at the Faculty of Law of Caen where he earned two graduate degrees, one in Political Science and the other in Legal History.
He also taught the history of law and political ideas in Caen from 1972-82.
