About BT Group[edit]
The BT Group, or BT (British Telecom), is a leading telecommunications multinational with headquarters in the UK. The company has operations in over 50 countries and provides products and services to consumers in 170 countries worldwide, including Europe, North and South America, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. .== Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy == The BT Group is extremely committed to contributing positively to society, economy and environment through its operations, its employees and its services. The core purpose of the company is “to use the power of communications to make a better world” (BT 2014). The company tries to act responsibly, sustainably and with integrity and to work ethically during their daily operations. The BT Group has received much praise for placing sustainability at the heart of its business model, since this will allow them to provide long-term profitability for its shareholders. Since 2004, all BT’s electricity has come from renewable sources. As a sustainable and responsible business leader, the BT Group launched in 2013 the ‘Net Good 2020 goal’, which aims to “help customers to reduce carbon emissions by at least three times the end-to-end carbon impact of their business. This 3:1 goal compares the carbon abatement effect of BT’s products and services against BT’s full carbon footprint” (BT 2014). The BT Group also invests in various cultural activities and events.
Employment Policy[edit]
As an inclusive employer, the BT Group actively celebrates differences and encourages employee diversity. BT is proud to treat all their employees fairly. The company promotes a healthy work-life balance through a series of personal development schemes. Over 30% of the BT Group’s board members are women, but the company is dedicated to increase this number. In addition, disabled people are actively encouraged to apply.
Education[edit]
International Internship Programs[edit]
The BT Group supports young people in particular and provides a lot of on the job training placement possibilities. The company created, among others, a Graduate Programme and multiple Undergraduate Placements. Graduates interested in the commercial world can become part of the Business Graduate Programme. Within this programme, graduates can then choose to specialise in Sales, Marketing or Business Management (legal or general). Another option is the Technology Graduate Programme, which is designed for graduates who are interested in a career in technology. In addition, BT created a Technology Internship Program, which is specifically designed for students that are looking for a technological summer placement or students that would like to work for a year in the industry.Furthermore BT invites volunteers from all over the world and offers multiple apprenticeships.
Grants and Scholarships[edit]
Over the past few years, BT has rewarded organisations, community groups and charities across Scotland and England with grants, sometimes up to thousands of pounds. This year, the BT Financial Group has awarded an Industry Scholarship to one of their consultants for her well-researched essay.
Notable Activities[edit]
Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid[edit]
The BT Group has also created MyDonate, a not-for-profit, online fundraising service for UK charities, which “provides a secure, easy-to-use way for millions of people to raise money for their favourite charity” (BT 2014).
Supporting Sport and Other Cultural Activities[edit]
BT is convinced that communications technology plays an important role in helping society to function well. The group has a long history of working with good causes and invests in different social and cultural activities. They have, among others, developed a Better Future programme, designed to realise the BT Group’s ambition to keep being a responsible and sustainable business leader. Within the framework of this Better Future programme, the company has already organised multiple initiatives. One example is the ‘GradPike 2014’, which is “a charity canoeing challenge organised by a team of BT graduates for graduates and apprentices across the company” (BT 2014). The aim of this charity challenge is to raise money for ‘The Supporters Club’, which is another charitable initiative within the BT’s Better Future framework. The Supporters Club aims to unite people and improve lives globally through the power of sport. The Club raises money for children with disabilities and for programmes that use sport to get young people back into education or employment. BT works together with Comic Relief and other charitable partners in order to transform lives and create a better future for young people in Europe and internationally.

In addition, the BT Group was, in 2014, once again the official supporter of BBC Children in Need.
