After matriculating she worked as a supply teacher at the Marttila Village Primary School, after which she was an office assistant at the Loimaa tax office. She then went to work as secretary to the chief physician and stockkeeper at the South-Western Häme psychiatric hospital for long-term patients. She has also worked as a financial manager for the Kankaanpää vocational course centre, as an office secretary for the Urjala Municipality and as an assistant financial manager of the Forssa health centre.

She was a member of the European Parliament in 1996-1999 before returning to the Finnish parliament again. Sirkka-Liisa Anttila was Minister of Agriculture and Forestry between 2007-2011.
