Edward Michael "Ed" Balls (born 25 February 1967) is a British Labour Party politician, who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Morley and Outwood since 2010, and is the current Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Political Career[edit]
Ed Balls commenced his Political Career with his appointment as Labour MP for Normanton from 2005 until 2010. In 2010 he was elected as MP for Morley and Outwood. He has untaken numerous roles throughout his period as MP which include: Economic Secretary (HM Treasury) from 2006-2007. When Gordon Brown became Prime Minister Balls became Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families in 2007 after a reshuffle of the cabinet. Following on from this role in 2010 Balls announced that he was standing in the election to replace Brown. The other contenders were former Foreign Secretary David Miliband, former Health Secretary Andy Burnham, backbencher Diane Abbott and former Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, who would go on to win. Ed Miliband would go on to appoint Balls as Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, a post which he held from 2010-2011. He now currently holds the post of Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Education[edit]
Ed Balls attended Crossdale Drive primary school and then Nottingham High School. Ed went on to study at Keble College, Oxford, and the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard.
