Tom Brake is the Liberal Democrat MP for Carshallton and Wallington. He was born in Melton Mowbray, and now lives in his constituency with his wife Candida Goulden.
Political Career[edit]
Tom Brake was elected as a councillor in Hackney before moving to Carshalton where he was elected as a councillor in 1994, his election consolidated Liberal Democrat control of Sutton Council. In 1997 he stood as the Parliamentary Candidate for Carshalton and Wallington where he successfully overturned at Conservative majority. At the most recent general election Tom increased his majority to 5,260.
Tom is also a committed and dedicated campaigner having secured victories for the community - helping Save St Helier Hospital's A&E and maternity unit from closure, saving the Thameslink from ending at Blackfriars and securing the partial re-introduction of the night bus. He has won several awards for his campaigning, website, and for his highly respected 'e-group'.
Whilst in parliament Tom Brake was first appointed to a ministerial position in September 2012, when he became Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, prior to this he had been appointed a Privy Counsellor in June 2011.
Education[edit]
Tom was educated at the Lycee International School in Paris. He returned to the UK at the age of 18 and studied a degree in physics at Imperial College London. As a student Tom was very involved in human rights issues and the environment and he credits this activism as what drove him to go into politics.
