About Severstal
OAO Severstal (from Russian translated to "Northern Steel") is a Russian company mainly operating in the steel and mining industry, centred in the northern city of Cherepovets. As of 2009, it is the largest steel company in Russia according to the Metal Bulletin. The majority of the company's stock belongs to Alexey Mordashov. The company also has mining assets in Russia and the USA, thus securing its supply of raw materials. Severstal is listed on the Moscow Exchange and London Stock Exchange.
Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy
Severstal has collaborated with Russia's leading museums and theatres over the years. For instance, Severstal has been on the Board of Trustees of the Tretyakov State Gallery since the year 2002, and since 2004 has been cooperating with the Russian Museum. Severstal has been supporting art exhibitions and master classes in many schools in many Russian regions. Severstal also gives the opportunity the receive a grant in the form of a contest for regional art museums in Russia. Contest winners receive funding for their projects.

Severstal gives the opportunity to the foreign students to make their internship in Severstallat; the Latvian branch of the company in Riga. This year for example, two students from Humanitas University in Poland arrived to JSC Severstallat in Riga within the European student exchange program - Erasmus, which opens doors to opportunities for students to study and work abroad.

Promoting Human- and Civil Rights
Severstal uses The Business System for implementation of their Corporate Social Responsibility Program which covers all of its key aspects in compliance with the ISO 26000 standard (“Guidance on Social Responsibility”). These include among human rights also organizational governance, labor practices, environmental protection, consumer challenges and local communities.
Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid
Child abandonment is one of the biggest social problems in Russia. The number of orphans in Russia is now nearing 740,000, which makes it 3% of the total child population in the country. In 2006 Severstal launched the Road Home Program, which focuses on the prevention of child neglect and orphanhood in the city of Cherepovets. Cherepovets and the Vologda Region are currently one of the best illustrations of a successful state-private partnership in the effort of resolving the orphanhood issues in Russia. This program uses new approaches to social work and consolidates efforts of the business, authorities, and society. The program has been successful in that more than 10,000 people have received psychological, social and financial assistance. Since 2007, e Road Home Program experts prevented 82 cases of neonatal abandonment and graduates of School for Adoptive Parents adopted 88 children (none of whose was sent back to the institution).
Supporting Music and Visual Arts
Severstal has been in partnership with the Bolshoi Theatre for already 10 years. In the 2011 they supported premiere of the ballet performance of The Nutcracker. This premiere was a symbolic event for Russian culture and international theater. Severstal has also worked with the Mariinsky Theatre since 2003 and supported many events, among them also Moscow Easter Festival or the First International Festival of Young European Cinema called VOICES. In 2006 Severstal started to support the Golden Mask Theater Festival in Riga, and from 2010, top performances from this festival are also brought to Cherepovets.
Supporting Sports
Severstal is socially very active in areas as education and culture, prevention of orphanhood, support for mothers and children, healthcare, development of local communities, and support for retirees and last but not least sports. In November 2013, for example, Severstal sponsored the building of a water park in Cherepovets. The water park was built under the cooperation agreement between the Government of Vologda Oblast and Severstal. Other example of their engagement is that Severstal every year provides 98 million rubles of support to youth hockey.
