Theodoros Pangalos, born on August 17, 1938, in Eleusis, is a Greek politician and leading member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement. He served as a Deputy Prime Minister of Greece. He is responsible for the coordination of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) and the new Economic & Social Policy Committee from 2009 to 2012. With significant effect on student movement and a founding member of the Youth Lambrakis, Theodor Pangalos played an active role in the anti-dictatorship struggle.
Studies
Theodoros Pangalos studied law at Athens University and received a doctorate degree in Economics at the University of Paris I (Panthéon Sorbonne).
Professional life
From 1969 to 1978, Theodoros Pangalos worked at the Sorbonne as an associate teacher and researcher in economic development. He was also the Director of the Economic Development Institute within the same University. Political career Theodoros Pangalos started his political career when he became Under-Secretary of Commerce in 1982. In 1984, he became Deputy Foreign Minister for European Community issues. Theodoros Pangalos was elected Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1985 to 1989 and re-elected in 1993 to 1994. During the period from 1989 to 1993, he was appointed Representative of Greek Parliament in the Council of Europe. In 1989, he was first elected MP of the PanHellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and still holds that position currently. In 1994, Pangalos became Minister of Transport and Communications. In January 1996, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and held that position till 1999. A year later, he became Minister of Culture. In June 2003, Theodoros Pangalos was spokesman of PASOK in the Foreign Policy Council. In November 2004, he was appointed coordinator of the party's Electoral Campaign, then took charge of the Local Administration, Public Administration and Justice. From 2004 to the elections of 2009, he represented the Greek Parliament to the Parliament Assembly of the Western European Union and the Council of Europe. On October 6th, 2009 he became Deputy Prime Minister and he remained chairman until May of 2012. Publications Theodoros Pangalos is the author of many articles and several books including: "Globalization and the Left" (2001), "Ephemeral Prophets - Deadlocks neoliberalism and social movements in the era of globalization" (2005), "Europe is at a crossroads" (2005), "Intervention in News" (1994), "The Greece in the European Community '(1988).
