In 1978, soon after his graduation, he pursued his career as assistant professor at the Sofia University. In 1987, he became an associate professor and in 1995, a professor of modern history of the Balkan Peoples. From 2003 to 2007, he was a dean of the History Department at Sofia University and a member of the Academic Council. In 2007, he became the Rector of Sofia University. He is also an author of numerous articles, review, popular science film scripts and monographs.
