Jan van Anken was born on May 1, 1961 in Reinbeck. He is a member of the Bundestag and member of the Left Party.
Political Career[edit]
He is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation in the German Bundestag. Jan van Aken entered the 17th Bundestag in 2009 after he was listed on the Left electoral lists in Hamburg. Since June 2012 he has been a deputy chairperson of the Left Party. He was one of the eight lead candidates for the Left in the 2013 federal election and was therefore also elected to the 18th Bundestag.
Biography[edit]
A biologist by profession and member of the Left Party, van Aken has been an active member of various social movements since the 1980s, such as those protesting against nuclear energy and genetically modified food. From 1997 to 1998 he worked as a campaigner for Greenpeace Germany. From 2004 to 2006, he was a Biological Weapons Inspector in service for the United Nations. Since 2009 van Aken has been a member of the Bundestag, and between 2009-2011 he was the deputy chairman of the Left Party.
