Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici was elected to Parliament for the Nationalist Party in 1998. The same year he was appointed Chairman of Committees and became permanent member of a number of other committees including the Standing Committee on Privileges and the Standing Committee on the Consideration of Laws. Between October 2001 and March 2003 he was a member of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. In April 2003, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs. In March 2004, Hon.
