The littoral zone is the part of a water mass, ocean, river, or sea that is close to the shore. There are varying definitions of the littoral zone depending on the type of water mass and also the context of its use, for example it would be used differently in a military as opposed to a marine biology scenario. In marine biology, the littoral zone extends roughly to the edge of the continental shelf, where it divides into subregions known as the supralittoral zone, the eulittoral zone and the sublittoral zone.
