David Garfield Davies, Baron Davies of Coity, Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, was born on 24th June 1935. He is a Labour Co-operative Peer in the House of Lords and a former trade union leader.
Political Career
In 1997 David Davies was created a Life Peer as Baron Davies of Coity, of Penybont in the County of Mid Glamorgan and joined the House of Lords. Since 2004, he has been a member of the Ecclesiastical Joint Committee. He is also President of the Kidney Research UK in Wales, of the Greater Manchester East County Scout Council, and President of the Seashell Trust.
Education
Baron Davies left school when he was a teenager and began to work as an electrician, serving in the Royal Air Force between 1956 and 1958. In 1969 he became a full-time trade union official with Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers. Later in 1986, he became General Secretary of the union. He retired after 11 years.
