Fotios - Fanourios Kouvelis (Greek: Φώτης Κουβέλης, born on September 3, 1948 in Volos, Greece) is a Greek politician and lawyer. He is the President of the Democratic Left Parliamentary Group and a Member of the Parliament in the second electoral constituency of Athens.
Political Career[edit]
He was electedas an MP (Synaspismos) for Athens B in the general election of 1989 (November), 1990, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2009 with Synaspismos Rizospastikis Aristeras (Coalition of Radical Left).
He was Minister of Justice from 2.7.1989 to 12.10.1989.
Prior to the military dictatorship (1967-1974) he was a member of the Lambrakis Youth Organization, and during the dictatorship he was a member of the left-wing political organization “Rigas Fereos”. He was a founding member of the Greek Left, and a member of its Central Committee (1987) and Executive Office. In 25th of June 1989 he was elected General Secretary of the Greek Left up until it was incorporated in Sinaspismos. In 1989 he was elected as a member of the Central Committee and Executive Office of Synaspismos. At the 1st National Convention of Synaspismos, on 30th of June 1991 he was elected as a member of the Central Political Committee and a member of the Political Secretariat and three days later he was appointed party secretary. In 1992 and 1993 he was elected to the Central Political Committee and to the Political Secretariat of the party. At the 2nd Synaspismos party conference (1996) & at the 3rd one (2000) he was re-elected to the Central Political Committee. In June 2000 he was re-elected as a member of the political Secretariat of Synaspismos of Left & Ecology Movements. In December 2004, at the 4th National Convention of Synaspismos of Left & Ecology Movements he was re-elected to the Central Political Committee. During 2002-2004 he was a member of the Municipal Council of the city of Athens.
On July 10, 2010, he was named President of the Democratic Left party.
He is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice, of the Special Permanent Committee on Institutions and Transparency. He is chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship Group Greece-Armenia.
