About Statoil ASA

Statoil ASA is a Norwegian multinational oil and gas company with headquarters in Stavanger , Norway, and approximately 23,000 employees worldwide. It is a fully integrated petroleum company with operations in thirty-six countries. The Norwegian government is the largest shareholder in Statoil with 67% of the shares, while the rest is public stock (New York and Oslo stock exchanges).

Education

International Internship Program

Statoil ASA offers summer internships for students who are in their second year of their Bachelors degree, until their first year of Master.

Grants and Scholarships

Statoil supports young performers in education, sports and culture through the scholarship ‘Heroes of Tomorrow’. Moreover, Statoil has awarded scholarship funds to eight graduate students from the University of Texas at Austin (UT) in the areas of Geology, Geophysics and Petroleum Technology. Statoil is also financing a professorship for a new master's degree programme in energy and the environment in the far north at the University of Tromsø.

Cooperation with Universities

Statoil maintains long-term collaboration agreements with nine academic institutions in Norway as well as with strategically important universities internationally. Approximately 1,15 million EUR has been given by Statoil to help the Stavanger University College (HiS) in its efforts to achieve full university status. Statoil and the University of Texas at Austin (UT) have signed an Energy Partnership agreement providing the university with an annual funding of USD 1 million for 5 years.

Notable Activities

Promoting Human- and Civil Rights

Statoil conducts all safety and security activities in accordance with applicable laws and internationally recognised human rights principles. Statoil’s commitment to respect human rights and labour standards is based on the International Bill of Human Rights, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Labour Organization's (ILO) 1998 Declaration on Fundamental Rights and Principles at Work. Statoil follows the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and endorse the United Nations Global Compact Principles and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR). Since 1998 Statoil has a collaborative agreement with the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) that covers all Statoil employees in all countries in which they operate. This further affirms the support for fundamental human rights in the community and workplace. Moreover Statoil supports the work of Amnesty International Norway, through a corporate partnership agreement and with the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights to support the Centre's international outreach work on human rights issues. The agreement also aims to foster an exchange of ideas and information on human rights related issues of relevance to their operations. StatoilHydro has a corporate agreement in support of Norwegian Refugee Council’s activities. Statoil regularly consults the NRC on humanitarian and human rights issues, and benefit from their in-depth country-context expertise relevant to their operations.

Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid

Statoil has a broad portfolio of community investments in the countries where they operate. Community investments entails social investment projects (voluntary and mandatory), sponsorships and donations. E.g. Statoil is renewing its corporate agreement with the Norwegian Refugee Council and donating NOK 500,000 to the humanitarian organisation. Statoil also received the 2011 Award of Excellence for Contribution to Community and Community Service from the St. John’s Board of Trade. The award recognizes a business that has demonstrated an ongoing commitment through time and effort dedicated to community initiatives.

Supporting Music and Visual Arts

Statoil advocates investing in arts and culture by supporting the ‘Heroes of Tomorrow’ program. The idea behind this program is that the world is facing major challenges and highly skilled professionals are needed to help progress in the future. The individuals with the ability and desire to think outside the box and those who strive to make the impossible possible are supported by Statoil’s program. Furthermore, the Statoil art programme gives, every year, the Statoil art award to promising new artists.

Supporting Sports

Statoil invests in sports, e.g.: A five-year collaboration agreement has been signed by Statoil with the Norwegian Ski Federation on developing talented skiers, with a key place assigned to the, Team Heroes of Tomorrow, rising British tennis star Heather Watson signs sponsorship agreement with Statoil, young tennis players had the opportunity to channel their sporting hero Andy Murray with a lesson from the champion’s former coach as part of a charity programme launched in Aberdeen in partnership with Sport Aberdeen and supported by Statoil.
