Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner - Sting

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, better known by Sting, was born the 2nd ofOctober,1951 in Wallsend, United Kingdom. He is an English musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in the rock band The Police, activist, actor, and philanthropist. As a member of The Police, Sting became one of the world’s best music selling artist. In 2006 he was ranked 62ndon the list of the “100 Best Living Songwriters” by Paste Magazine, 63rd on the “100 Greatest Artisits of Rock” on VH1’s, and the 80th on Q’s Magazine on the “100 Greatest Musical Stars of the 20th Century”. During his career, Sting has received 16 Grammy Awards, 3 Brit Awards, a Golden Globe award, an Emmy Award, and several Oscar nominations for Best Original Song.

Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy[edit]

Humanitarian Causes[edit]

Sting’s Humanitarian actions start in early eighties when he was invited to participate in the fourth Amnesty International gala “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball”. His association with Amnesty continued from that time on with his participation in many of the Amnesty’s Human Rights concerts. In 1984 Sting participate in the “Feed the World” project. A year later he sang on “Do They Know it’s Chistmas?”, from Band Aid. Sting had also participate in different humanitarian programs and concerts for the reconstruction of countries and cities devastated by natural catastrophes. In 1997 he played with Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Sir Elton John, Phil Collins and Mark Knopfler in a benefit concert for the Caribbean island of Montserrat which had been devastated by an eruption of a volcano. In February 2005 Sting performed at the Leeuwin Estate Concert Series in Western Australia, to raise money for the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami relief efforts. $4 million were raised in the concert. On the 2 of November 2012, he participate on “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” by singing a version of "Message in a Bottle" to help raise funds for the American Red Cross to help those affected by the storm in the east coast of the Unites States.

Philanthropic Donations[edit]

Sting is engaged with different programs such as “Stars Donate To Tibet House US Auction” or the “International Rescue Committee” hosted its annual Freedom Award Dinner this 2014, which raise more than $4.5 million to support the organization’s lifesaving humanitarian aid work around the world.

Notable Actions[edit]

In 1989 Sting co-founded The Rainforest Foundation in a partnership with his wife Trudie Styler. The final goal of the foundation is to save the rainforests in South Africa and protect the rights of the indigenous peoples living there. To this end, an Annual Concert is held every year to raise money. Sting is a patron of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and in in 2010 he became a Patron of the poverty alleviation and beekeeping charity Bees for Development.
