The art exhibition ‘Rizal through the Eyes of Artists’ is held at the Philippine Embassy in in Kurfürstendamm Berlin from July 29th to August 12th. The exhibition aims to celebrate the Philippines’ upcoming National Heroes Day and honor the late National hero Jose Rizal. With artists presenting Rizal’s image in different forms, the exhibit shows the historical and cultural contents to the public.
The national hero Jose Rizal was the Filipino nationalist who initiated the reform of Spanish rule in the Philippines. He was a patriot, physician and author. His literary works were inspirations of the Philippine national movements. In addition to celebrating National Heroes Day on August 29th, this exhibition will honor his 155th Birth Anniversary held on June 19th.
With a formal opening held on July 28th, the visual art exhibition is organized by the Philippine Embassy in Berlin and Transwing Art Gallery. The works of Arnel Garcia, Rene Robles. Ronna Manansala, and Ferdinand Ruiz are on display. Over 50 Filipinos and Germans attended the opening vernissage. During the vernissage, Filipino merienda was served and poems of Rizal were delivered.
Pampanga-based artist Arnel David Garcia talked about his art work. In his work, relief sculptures (resin and mixed media) were used to present Rizal. One of the interpretations split Rizal’s face into several parts to show the hero’s various facets. Another sculpture placed Rizal together with leaders who have significant impacts on people, such as Jesus Christ and Mao Tse-tung.
Ferdinand Rae Ruiz, a Bulacan-based painter and graphic artists presented his acrylic rendition ‘Rizal Map,’ which shows Rizal’s picture with a backdrop map composed of the places the hero visited in Europe. Ronna Manansala’s oil rendition applied bold brush strokes to show Rizal. She is the granddaughter of the Philippines’ National Artist, Vicente Manansala.
‘Rizal through the Eyes of Artists’ is open for visit from Monday to Friday, between 09:00 to 16:00, from July 29th to August 12th, at the Philippine Embassy located on the 2nd Floor Haus Cumberland, Kurfürstendamm 194, 10707 Berlin.
