Introduction

Dimitrios Gakis was born in Kozani in 1957. He is a Greek politician and physicist.

Political Career

Gakis was elected to the Rhodes municipal council in 2010, having served for 12 years as the secretary for the Coalition of the Left (Synaspismos) Party's prefectural committee for the southern Dodecanese Islands (SE Aegean region).

Gakis was elected to Parliament on the SYRIZA- Unitary Social Front (SYRIZA-USF) Party's ticket during the June 17, 2012 general election, representing the Dodecanese islands district, which includes several of Greece's best-known isles. In Parliament, he serves on the Standing Committee for Economic Affairs, as well as the Special Permanent Committee of Regions. He is also a member of the Maritime, Regional & Island Policies Committee as well as on the Tourism Committee on behalf of SYRIZA-USF’s parliamentary oversight activities.

Education Career

A graduate of the physics faculty of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Gakis earned a MSc degree on the subject of "Gender and New Educational and Labour Environments in the Information Society" from the University of the Aegean (Greece) in 2009. His post-graduate thesis focused on educational and labour environments in the so-called "information society".

Professional Career

He worked for the Hellenic Telecommunication Organization (OTE), Greece's telephony utility, until his retirement in 2010, serving in the city of Rhodes regional branch.
