Dimitrios Kremastinos was born on the island of Chalki, in Dodecanese in 1942.He is a Greek politician and Professor of Cardiology. Elected MP (PASOK) for the Dodecanese in the 2000 and 2009 general election.

Political Career

Minister for Health (extra-parliamentary), October 1993-February 1996. Joined PASOK in 1974. Member of the PASOK Central Committee since 1996. Member of the Standing Committee on Educational Affairs, the Special Standing Committee on Institutions and Transparency, and the Parliamentary Committee on Narcotics.

Education Career

He studied Medicine in the University of Athens.He did postgraduate studies in Cardiology on a state scholarship at the University of London (Royal Postgraduate Medical School, St. Thomas Hospital, Guy’s Hospital (1973-1976).

Notable Work

Practising Pathologist and Cardiologist since 1974. Pursued an academic career for the last 25 years. He set up an Intensive Care Unit for heart-attack and coronary disease patients at the Ippokrateio Hospital while a university doctor there. Elected head of the Cardiology Department of the Athens General Public Hospital in 1985. Appointed director of the Onaseio Heart Surgery Centre in 1993, where he developed the 2nd Cardiological Department. Board member of the Hellenic Cardiology Society (1976-1993). Member of the Greek College of Cardiology and Heart Surgery. Honorary Professor of Cardiology at the University of Belgrade School of Medicine. Published 715 papers on Cardiology. His work is considered ground-breaking and is extensively cited in the international bibliography. His work has received special mention in the official journal of the New York Academy of Sciences.
