Rolf Tarrach, Spanish physicist born in 1948 in Valencia, Spain is the rector of the new trilingual University of Luxembourg as of January 2005. He is on the European University association Council and is the president of the Academic Association as of December 2008.

Professional career

He is currently a professor of theoretical physics at the Universities of Valencia and Barcelona. He was Dean of the School of Physics and Vice-Rector of the University of Barcelona. He has published more than 100 papers in theoretical high energy physics, quantum field theory, quantum mechanics and in quantum information theory and has written two books. He has successfully supervised 12 PhD theses. Rolf Tarrach has given more than 100 talks and seminars on physics and more than 100 conferences on general science, research, scientific policy energy, higher education policy, science and philosophy and innovation. He is the former president of CSIC Madrid (the Spanish Scientific Research Council).

Education

Rolf Tarrach studied physics at the University of Valencia, Spain, and got his PhD from the University of Barcelona. He was a postdoctoral researcher at CERN, Geneva. He has been honored with a honoris causa degree form the university of Saint Peterburg, Russia.

Special Achievement

He is the former member of the European Union Reasearch Advisory Board, of the European Heads of Research Council group (which he also chaired) and of the 5-years assessment panel of expert of the European Commision. He is a former member of the Board of Telefonica of Catalonia and has been a co-organizer of the first three Euroscience Open Forum meetings in Stockholm (2004), Munich (2006) and Barcelona (2008).
