Pilar Barreiro Álvarez

Pilar Álvarez Barreiro (Lugo, 24 November 1955) is a Spanish politician. She is currently the Mayor of Cartagena. She is a member of the People's Party and a member of Congress since March 2008

Political Career

Between 1991 and 1995, she was Deputy in the Regional Assembly of Murcia Cartagena as well as deputy spokeswoman for the People' Party. Pilar Barreiro Alvarez became the first female Mayor in the history of Cartagena. She was re-elected in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011. In January 2008, she was appointed by the People's Party of the Region of Murcia as chief candidate for Congress in the general election. She was elected as Deputy with 61.43% of the vote.

Education

She graduated in Law and Business from ICADE. She began teaching in 1986 at the Graduate School of Social Cartagena, having taught at the School of Business Studies. She currently teaches at the National University of Distance Education.
