Matjaž Švagan (born May 21, 1963) is a member of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia.

Political career[edit]

From 1984 to 1990 he held the position of the Secretary of the Municipal Committee of Socialist Youth of Slovenija Zagorje ob Savi. In 1992, he joined the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (Liberalna demokracija Slovenije) and became a member of the electoral headquarters of Janez Drnovšek. In 1992, he was elected the President of the Assembly of the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi and in 1994 the Mayor of the same municipality. He is now serving the fifth term. In 2010, he established a party at the municipal level; Zagorje gre naprej - Association for the Advancement of Zasavja. The party won an absolute majority in the last local elections for the municipal council.

Švagan was also a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, in the term 2000-2004 and 2004-2008. In 2012, he was elected to the National Council, as the representative of regional interests.

Professional Career[edit]

In 1990, he founded a newspaper Zasavci of which he was also editor-in-chief. From 1996 to 2000, he was a member of the Supervisory Board of Pošta Slovenije (Post of Slovenia) and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Rudnik Zagorje (mine) in closing. From 2008 to 2010, Švagan was the President of the Assembly of Komunala Zagorje ob Savi do.o.o. (utility services) and in the years 2009 to 2010, a member of the Council of Zasavske lekarne (Zasavje pharmacies).

Education[edit]

He is an engineer of work organization. Švagan passed the exam for assembly members and supervisory board members in 2009.
