Jeremy Ashdown

Jeremy John Durham Ashdown, Baron Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, was born on 24th February 1941 in New Delhi, India. He is a British politician and diplomat.

Political Career

Jeremy Ashdown served the Royal Marine from 1959 to 1972, and then joined the UK Secret Intelligence Service. As intelligence officer, he worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as First Secretary to the UK mission to the United Nations in Geneva. At the UN, Ashdown was responsible for relations with several UN organisations, and he also got involved in the negotiation of several international treaties. Lord Ashdown was a Member of Parliament for the constituency of Yeovil from 1983 to 2001. From 1988 to 1999 he was Leader of the Liberal Democrats. Then he has been member of the Science and Technology Committee at the House of Commons.


Notable Work

From 2002 to 2006 he was International Community High Representative and European Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 2009 Ashdown is President of UNICEF UK. He is also Board Member of Interpeace, international non-governmental peacebuilding organization based in Geneva.
