Guusje ter Horst
Guusje ter Horst was born on the 22nd of March 1952 in Deventer. Since 2011, she is a member of the Dutch Senate for the Labour Party (PvdA).
Political career
Before her political career, she worked as a research assistant at the Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam. In 1986 she became an associate professor at this institute. From 1986 to 1992 she was a member of the city council of Amsterdam for the PvdA. Between 1992 and 1994 she was the chairman of the University Council of the University of Amsterdam. From 1994 to 1998 she was an alderman in the municipality of Amsterdam in the field of health care, Human Resources and historic preservation. Between 1998 and 2001 she was an alderman as well, but this time in the field of public areas and public utility. In 2001 she became the mayor of Nijmegen, a position which she would held for six years. Subsequently, she was minister of the Interior and Kingdom relations between 2007 and 2010. Between 2011 and 2012 she was the chairman of the 'HBO-raad'.
Education
Ter Horst studied psychologie at the University of Amsterdam between 1970 and 1976. She got her PhD in the social sciences in 1984.

In 2010, ter Horst became an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. This order is a chivalric order open to everyone who has earned special merits for society.
